Ask Carol Crowe and she'll tell you that she knows how it feels to lose her soul. She's been there.
Carol is the Program Manager at Buckley Sobering and Detox Center. She's been with the program for over 13 years and has seen many people overcome alcoholism and addiction to become productive, clean and sober members of the community. They give her the inspiration to continue.
Her personal journey brings compassion and insight into the struggles that so many face when they come to Buckley Center. Her early life drew her into addiction where she "lost my soul." When she entered recovery, she found herself with few job skills and no employ-ment. Gradually, she found her way to Buckley Center, where she began as a graveyard shift aide and worked her way up with increasing levels of responsibility within the program. She earned her CADC I through Willamette Family staff development programs.
As part of Willamette Family's involvement in the NIDA and OSHU research trials, Carol worked on an important research project that studied the most effective intervention treatment models for individuals with Hepatitis C and/or HIV who are IV drug users as well.
Last year, there were 6,000 admissions to Buckley Center. So many of the individuals are homeless and without resources to get help. Carol says that she gets to be a stable point in their lives, "somebody they can talk to," in addition to offering a hand to those beginning sobriety. She coordinates referrals to recovery houses, treatment programs, and other community resources. Buckley Center is an important link in the public safety net, working closely with all law enforcement agencies in Lane County, CAHOOTS, and the Emergency Room at Sacred Heart .
If she had three wishes, Carol would wish for increased housing resources, more treatment beds, and stable funding so that the life-saving services that Buckley provides could be available to more people in our community. And this passion for others runs in the family...her husband Mike also works at Buckley Center as a counselor!
Buckley Center provides sobering and detoxification services to individuals in the community without regard to financial circumstances. Buckley Center is located at 605 W. 4th Avenue, Eugene. It is a 24 hour/7 day per week facility.
